Creating and Managing Assessments

Instructors have the ability to create online assessments (tests or quizzes) that their students can take within the course site using the Assessment Manager.

To Create an test:

  • From the Control Panel of your site, clickTest Manager in the “Assessment” area
  • Click Add Test
  • Enter a Name and Description and Instructions for your test and click Submit
  • To Add Questions:
    • Use the drop-down menu to select a Question Type and click Go
    • Enter in your Question text, the Point Value, and possible Answers. Entering the Correct and Incorrect Responses for the student is optional.
    • Click Submit
  • To Save your Test:
    • After entering your last question, click OK

Note: Students are unable to take your online tests until you make them available.

To Make a Test available:

  • From the Control Panel of your site, click on the content area where you want to place the test (e.g Assignments, Course Documents, etc.)
  • Click Add Test
  • Select the existing test you want to use and click Submit, click OK
  • Click Modify the test options
  • Under Test Availability, click “Yes” next to Do you want to make the link visible?
  • Use the other options in areas 2, 3 and 4 to fully configure your test
  • Click Submit

Other Options – When setting the availability of your assessment you can:

  • Make tests available only for set days
  • Set a time limit for students taking an assessment
  • Set passwords for assessments, only allowing students who have the password to take the assessment
  • Allow students to retake assessments
  • Reveal the correct answers on assessments to students

To View Students’ Grades on assessments:

  • From the Control Panel of your site, click Grade Center, under the ‘Assessment’ heading
  • A spreadsheet view of grades automatically displays. To view all students grades on a single itern, click on the name of that itern and then click Item Grade List

To Reset an Assessment for a student who has had a technical problem:
(e.g. his or her computer crashed in the middle of the assessment)

  • From the Grade Center, Find the student’s name. In the space for the assessment, there should be a padlock, indicating that the grade is “In Progress.” Click on the
  • On the page that loads, click View
  • From here, you can click the Clear Attempt button to let the student retake the assessment, or just grade the questions that he or she did answer by hand and click Submit

Note: A survey is made by clicking on Survey Manager from the Control Panel. Surveys are identical to tests in all aspects but are not graded
