- Course Management System is intended for use as a secure communication
and web-publishing tool for faculty and students. Terms of its use fall
within the general policies for information technology within the University
(see http://www.it.northwestern.edu/policies/).
Instructors who want only email-based communication with their students
may wish to consider listserv
technology or the email functionality within the NU
Class Information/Management service.
- Faculty members or their support
staff (including teaching assistants) may request course sites for
University-offered courses. Site requests that do not relate to a specific
course are reviewed on a case-by-case basis for approval by the Learning
Support Systems office (email at course-management@northwestern.edu).
Students who want a course site for a course in which they are enrolled
should contact their instructor. Requests for course sites which
are not specific to a particular class
are reviewed for approval by the Learning Support Systems office on a case-by-case basis.
- Course sites are by default created
to be accessible only to those students enrolled in the corresponding
course. Instructors or their assistants are responsible for adding any
"special" members that may need access to a course, such as teaching
assistants, co-instructors, or other Northwestern people.
Instructors may make their sites accessible to the entire Northwestern community, but must
recognize that doing so will significantly diminish the force of any fair use claims they
might make to copyrighted materials on their sites.
Instructors
requiring participation by non-Northwestern individuals in their course
sites should contact the Learning Support Systems office; requests for
such access are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- Obtaining permission for use of
any copyrighted material placed in a course site is the responsibility
of the instructor, except for materials that are made available to course
sites through the University Library's Reserve Department. The Learning
Support Systems office encourages instructors to exercise their rights
under the Fair
Use provision of the U.S. Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 107 [1976]) to make
material available to students, and can provide on request information
for instructors on copyright matters.
- The placing of intellectual property
created by an instructor on a course site does not in any manner
affect the ownership of that property as defined through common practice
or University policy.
- Entries in a gradebook do not
have an official status for reporting grades to the University Registrar.
- No course site is deleted
unless the instructor requests it.
- Course sites can be made available for non-course use if these requirements
are met.
- The site is associated with an NU academic project or program.
- An NU faculty member is the designated administrator of the site.
- Everyone who needs access to the site has a Northwestern net id and
password.
If you have a question about obtaining a site for non-course use
please contact us.
