How do I copy a course site?
|
 |
Instructors can copy content of one course site to another if they have instructor access to both sites. Copying a course will add content to the destination course site and will not remove existing content. You have an option to specify which area or areas of your course site you would like to copy.
To copy a course site,
- Go to the Control Panel of the course site with the content you wish to copy
- Click Course Copy under Course Options
- Click Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course
- Click Browse next to Destination Course ID. A search box will appear.
- Proceed with one of the following:
- Select Search by: Course ID
- Type the destination course id into the text box (case sensitive). Use underscores in place of spaces
- Select Search by: Instructor (Recommended)
- Type your net id into the text box (case sensitive). If you are a TA, type the instructor's net id
- Select Search by: Title/Description
- Type a part of the destination course title (case sensitive
- Click Search. A window with your copy options will appear.
- Click Select for the desired destination course
- Back in the main window, select the Course Materials you would like to copy
- Click Submit

How do I delete a course site?
|
 |
The CMS Data Lifecycle Policy states that courses older than two years are deleted quarterly, unless an instructor requests that sites be retained.
If you anticipate using the course site in future teaching, please request to leave it on the server. If the site's presence on your CMS homepage is confusing, you can alter the site's name so that it appears at the bottom of the alphabetical list of sites under My Courses.
If you wish to delete your course site(s), please email: course-management@northwestern.edu, giving the full course titles or course ID's of the site(s) you would like to have removed.
Please note that once a course site is deleted, it is permanently removed from our server along with all its contents. Consider this carefully in deciding whether to delete a course site. |

Will my site expire when the term ends?
|
 |
No. You will continue to have access to your course site as long as the course site is retained in the Course Management System. Please note that courses older than two years are removed from our server unless you request that your sites be retained, as stated in the CMS Data Lifecycle Policy. |

How do I create an archive of a course site?
|
 |
When saving your course site, you have two options. You can either Archive the entire course site, or Export parts of it.
Note that if you use the Export function, no student data will be preserved. That can only be achieved through course Archive.
To Archive your course site,
- Go to the Control Panel
- Under Course Options, click Archive Course
- Click Submit
- Click Click here to download the exported course site and save the file on your local computer
To Export parts of your course site,
- Click Export Course
- Check the areas of your course you would like to export
- Click Submit
- Click on Click here to download the exported Course package and save the file to your computer
Note: With some browsers, you may need to click the right mouse button and select
Save Target As from the context menu.

How do I change the order of the course sites listed on the CMS main page?
|
 |
Course sites are listed in alphabetical order on the CMS mainpage; course names beginning with letter A will be placed on top and course names beginning with letter Z will be placed at the bottom.
However, a "space" is considered as a "letter" before A and hence, adding a space before the name of the course site will place the course site on top of the list.
To change the name of a course site,
- Go to the Control Panel of the course site
- Click Settings under Course Options
- Click Course Name and Description
- Change the Course Name according to your preference
- Click Submit
- Click OK

What browsers are compatible with the Visual Text Box (aka WYSIWYG) editor?
|
 |
For the current version of CMS/Blackboard, only Internet Explorer (IE) on Windows XP can be used with the Visual Text Box Editor. Below is how the Visual Text Box Editor will appear when using IE on Windows XP.

Any other browser or operating system will not have the advanced options that appear in Internet Explorer on Windows XP. Instead, a text box similar to the one below will appear.

If you have upgraded to Microsoft Vista, and you are still using Internet Explorer you will need to disable the visual text box editor. Please see the FAQ below for instructions. Alternatively, you can download and install Firefox. The text box editor will always work on Firefox, albiet without any advanced functionality.
